World Asthma Day 2024:
- World Asthma Day is an annual event that aims to make more people aware of the challenges those with asthma face. It’s organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), healthcare groups, and asthma educators
- The 2024 theme for World Asthma Day is “Uncovering Asthma Misconceptions,” to tackle prevalent myths and misunderstandings surrounding asthma.
Title of Grandmaster by FIDE:
- Indian Chess Prodigy, Vaishali Ramesh Babu, has officially been awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE, the International Chess Federation.
- This remarkable achievement makes Vaishali the third Indian female Grandmaster, joining Koneru Humpy and Harika Dronavalli.
GST collections for April this year recorded highest ever:
- The Gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue collections for April this year have recorded the highest ever collection of two lakh ten thousand crore rupees.
- Union Finance Ministry said this represents a significant 12.4% year-on-year growth, driven by a strong increase in domestic transactions and imports.
India’s core sector growth slows to 5.2% in March from 7.1% in February:
- The growth in output of eight key infrastructure industries slowed to 5.2% year-on-year in March from 7.1% in February on the back of a sequential deterioration recorded by five of its constituents. Output decelerated in sectors like coal (8.7%), crude oil (2%), natural gas (6.3%), and steel (5.5%) during March, according to Ministry of Commerce and Industry data.
35th Goldman Environmental Prize:
- Chhattisgarh Bachao Andolan Leader Alok Shukla Honored with Goldman Environmental PrizeOn 29th April 2024, Goldman Environmental Foundation announced the winners of the 35th Goldman Environmental Prize(2024), which is also known as “Green Nobel Prize”.
- Alok Shukla, convenor of the Chhattisgarh Bachao Andolan and founding member of the Hasdeo Aranya Bachao Sangharsh Samiti,won the 2024 Goldman Prize from Asia for his efforts to save the forests of Hasdeo Aranya in Chhattisgarh.
Hitesh Sethia Appointed as MD and CEO of Jio Financial Services Limited for 3 Years:
- Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) has approved the appointment of Hitesh Kumar Sethia as Managing Director(MD) and Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of Jio Financial Services Limited (JFSL) for a period of 3 years(with effect from 15th November, 2023).
ISRO Released ISSAR 2023 Report on Vulnerability of Space Assets to Collisions:
- Sreedhara Panicker Somanath, Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO) released the Indian Space Situational Assessment Report(ISSAR) for 2023 compiled by ISRO System for Safe and Sustainable Space Operations Management (IS4OM).
SPPL launched 6th ACTCM Barge – LSAM 20 (Yard 130) in Thane:
- LSAM 20 (Yard 130), the 6th Ammunition Cum Torpedo Cum Missile(ACTCM) Barge built by Suryadipta Projects Private Limited(SPPL) for Indian Navy was launched at the SPPL launch site in Thane, Maharashtra.
- The induction ceremony was presided over by Madhusudhan Bhui, Indian Naval Armament Service (INAS), General Manager (GM) of Naval Armament Depot (NAD) in Karanja, Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Walrus Death From Bird Flu In Arctic:
- A researcher from the Norwegian Polar Institute, Christian Lydersen, reported the first case of a walrus dying from bird flu on Hopen Island in the Svalbard archipelago
State Of The Climate In Asia : Report
- Asia has warmed faster than the global average since 1960, the World Meteorological Organisation’s 2023 ‘State of the Climate in Asia’ report has said.
- According to the report, released on April 23, the Asian continent is struggling with extreme climate events like floods and heatwaves, with record-breaking temperatures and precipitation reported across its countries.
4th Session Of Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee:
- The fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-4) of the United Nations Environment Agency (UNEA) was held in Ottawa, Canada attracting participation from over 170 member states.
- This session is part of the ongoing negotiations to build a legally binding treaty on plastics pollution by the end of 2024 under UNEA.
