President of GST Appellate Tribunal:

  • Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman today administered the oath of integrity and secrecy to retired Justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra as the President of the GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT), in New Delhi.
  • Justice Mishra’s appointment marks the beginning of the operationalization of the GSTAT, a crucial body for resolving GST-related disputes.

KKR acquires Bengaluru-based medical devices company Healthium MedTech:

  • Global investment firm KKR announced acquiring Bengaluru-based medical devices company Healthium Medtech from an affiliate of funds advised by private equity firm Apax Partners.
  • The transaction needs regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the third quarter of calendar year 2024.
  • The investment will be made through KKR’s Asian Fund IV.

ICICI Pru Life launches ULIP having fund value-based distributor payouts:

  • ICICI Prudential Life Insurance launched ICICI Pru Platinum, a Unit Linked Investment Plan (ULIP) that ties the distributor’s commission to their customers’ Assets Under Management (AUM).
  • According to the product specifications, customers have unlimited free switches between asset classes without any cost or tax implications.

AI-Powered Digital Spokesperson for Foreign Ministry:

  • Ukraine has unveiled an AI-generated spokesperson, named Victoria Shi, to deliver official statements from its foreign ministry.
  • This significant technological leap in diplomatic communication has captured global attention.

India-Nigeria Local Currency Settlement System Agreement:

  • India and Nigeria have agreed to finalize the Local Currency Settlement System Agreement to enhance bilateral trade.
  • The agreement, to be settled in Indian rupees and Nigerian naira, was discussed during the 2nd session of the India-Nigeria Joint Trade Committee in Abuja.

RBI Lowers Margin Funding Limits to 30% from 50%:

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decreased the maximum risk for custodian banks issuing irrevocable payment commitments (IPCs) from 50% to 30%.

Rat Hole Mining : Death Of Six Workers

  • Authorities were given four weeks by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to respond in a case related to the death of six workers in a rat-hole coal mine fire in Nagaland’s Wokha district.
  • Rat-Hole Mining named for its resemblance to rodent burrows, is an illegal and highly hazardous method of extracting coal prevalent in certain pockets of India, particularly the state of Meghalaya.

Chloropicrin : Chemical Weapon

  • The U.S. State Department accused Russia of using chemical agent chloropicrin in Ukraine which is a violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
  • Chloropicrin is a chemical compound which is also known as nitrochloroform.
  • It is used both as a warfare agent and pesticide.
  • It is a colourless to yellow oily liquid.
