India signed the High Seas Treaty, formally known as the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement, in September 2024, marking a major milestone in international ocean governance.The BBNJ Agreement developed under the framework of United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) focuses on conserving and sustainably using marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, which are beyond the 200 nautical miles (370 km) of Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs)
